The powers that be are taking the first steps towards reforming copyright laws in the UK to allow consumers to copy purchased CDs to their computer. Copyright reform’s importance is on the rise as we see new technology on the market, like the cloud-based music services offered by Google and Amazon. UK Business Secretary, Vince Cable, has determined that current copyright laws are inhibiting scientific progress.

“We are removing the barriers to the intellectual property system to encourage innovation. We need a legal framework that supports consumer use rather than one that sees it as regrettable,” he said.

The new law would also allow published scientific journals to be more accessible to researchers, rather than under the strict control of the publisher.
