Austin’s South by Southwest 2013 Conference

The South by Southwest (SXSW) is a music, film and interactive event that takes place in Austin, TX.  This year the event starts today March 8 and goes through the 17th.  The fist South by Southwest Conference was held in 1987. Austin wasn’t a Top 20 major market in 1987 but the character and background of the city made it a good choice for this type of event.  Austin is home to the University of Texas so it’s population is diverse and it’s party town reputation  dates back to the 19th century when General Custer’s troops filled the bars after the Civil War.

SXSW was a way to reach out to the rest of the world and make them aware of Austin’s eclectic music scene.  Austin offers a ton of music nightclubs and invites cosmic cowboy, blues, punk and other scenes to use Austin as a place to be creative. As Austin has grown, tech and film companies have played a major role in the economy so in 1994, SXSW added a film and interactive element.  The goal for SXSW is to bring together inspired types to meet and share ideas whether it’s music, film or the Internet.

Some of the performers for the event include: Fiona Apple, Vampire Weekend, George Clinton, Cypress Hill, Morrissey, NOFX, Foster the People, 50 Cent, Skrillex, Beastie Boys, Eminem, Duran Duran, The Black Keys, Katy Perry and Wu-Tang Clan.  At last year’s festival movies such as 21 Jump Street and The Cabin in the Woods premiered and over 2,500 musical acts performed at 100 venues citywide.

There are also comedy events, a gaming GEEK stage presented by GEEK Magazine, a Cirque du Soleil exclusive show called #Evoke13, a Game of Thrones art gallery, and so much more. Read more info on this kickass event here.
