Anyone on Earth Can Apply for an Astronaut Spot on Mars

If you’ve always dreamt of going into outer space, your chance is here. Not only for the ride of a lifetime (it takes 7 months to get to Mars) but you’ll get to live there…forever…starting in 2023.  Non-profit organization, Mars One intends to establish a permanent outpost on Mars. The outpost will be sustainable, habitable and designed to receive astronauts every 2 years.

That being said, Mars One needs to recruit and today it published its application criteria.  As the website states, “Once on Mars, there is no means to return to Earth. Mars is home. A grounded, deep sense of purpose will help each astronaut maintain his or her psychological stability and focus as they work together toward a shared and better future.”

The five key characteristics of an astronaut as depicted by Mars One are:

  • Resiliency
  • Adaptability
  • Curiosity
  • Ability to Trust
  • Creativity / Resourcefulness

The selection process begins this year and it will be a global televised process where the people of Earth will vote on which team of four will be the first Earth ambassadors of Mars. Other teams will then be sent in two-year intervals.  After of course extensive training of at least eight years including simulation missions that will invoke as many of the Mars conditions as possible. The missions will take place in the Mars suit that will have to be worn at all times as Mars is not a suitable atmosphere for humans. The air pressure is too thin to breathe and it contains too much carbon dioxide, read more about the climate of Mars, here.

You might be asking yourself “is this even possible?” Since Mars One is not the first group wanting to do this, yet no one has, they’ve outlined why they think it’s possible for them, here.
